About Me
What can I possibly say about myself? At 20 years, the story of my life has barely begun, so how could I write a bio!? But here is an attempt to shed some light on the enigma that is Michelle...
Sitting quietly in the corner of my world issues class, as a teenager, the last thing I would have been was actively involved. I always had the desire to do great things in life, but I was uncertain as to how I could accomplish them and compared to other annoyingly involved overachieving students I was far from being the next Mahatma Ghandi or Nelson Mandela. I remember a few students in that same class started a World Action Club to address some of the issues we were learning about in class. I couldn’t attend any of the meetings but I managed to contribute a few paintings for an auction at a fundraiser for Darfur. At the time I was in a visual arts program and most of my friends had great works of art sitting in dusty piles at home. While painting the idea popped in my head – why not create a network of artists who were willing to donate their paintings and help raise money to support a social cause. Say, Artists for change? But quickly I brushed the idea out of my head. It was too great. Too ambitious. And I was neither great nor ambitious. Instead, I was content to be left alone in the corner. Well, until now.
Fast forward a few years. Today, as a third year Political Science major (minoring in International Development Studies) at York University, I can confidently say that a passionate teacher and an awesome world issues class has sparked my interest for global issues. I still have crazy dreams to change the world, however now I know that I can accomplish whatever goals I set. I have dedicated my academic career to learning more about social issues and I am on my way to leaving my own unique mark on the world. I start my journey of social change as the TIGed (Taking IT Global for Educators) Program Assistant. I am excited at the prospect of enabling other students to find their passion and purpose in life, as well as helping students to become social innovators and global citizens. TIG offers amazing resources to students and teachers, so that they can easily become more inspired, informed and involved. Looking back, I wish I had taken advantage of this website in high school and brought my idea to light. But who knows, maybe by going through that experience, I can help someone else to achieve their dreams. One can only try...
